Sustainable MagnoliaFor our children… and theirs.
Recent scientific evidence shows that climate changes are happening even faster than scientists had originally predicted. There is growing concern that we may have already exceeded a level of atmospheric CO2 at which life can be sustained, and that we have less than a decade to turn things around and begin a return to acceptable CO2 levels. The safe level of CO2 is 350ppm.Current levels stand at 389ppm.Levels are rising about 2ppm per year.Renowned climate modeler, James Hanson, of the NASA/Goddard Institute for Space Studies, sums up the urgency of the situation: “The stakes, for all life on the planet, surpass those of any previous crisis. The greatest danger is continued ignorance and denial, which could make tragic consequences unavoidable.” James Hansen, et al, “Target Atmospheric CO2: Where Should Humanity Aim?” Two years ago, 10 concerned residents in Magnolia came together to have a “climate dialogue”. The outcome was Sustainable Magnolia. Out of concern for the impacts of climate change, the group takes action in the hope that we can turn around the trend toward an unsustainable future. Won’t you join us in our efforts… not so much for ourselves, but for our children and theirs? Magnolia's Climate Action Tree Planting! On October 24, 125 Magnolia citizens joined forces at Discovery Park to plant 350 trees and make a statement about climate change. The event was part of a global climate action day organized by 350.org to emphasize to world leaders that the safe target for atmospheric CO2 is 350 parts per million. Since the atmosphere has already passed this limit, immediate action is required. The event was sponsored by Sustainable Magnolia, Seattle Parks and Recreation Department , and Dietz Design Group. Purchase of the trees was funded by donations from many Magnolia residents and business sponsors. The weather was ideal and fun was had by all! Click here to see a gallery of photos from the event!
